Lingerie Guide for Every Body
If you're thinking of doing a boudoir photo shoot, the first thing you need to do is figure out what kind of lingerie will look best in your photos. There are many different factors that go into choosing the right outfits for a boudoir session, including your skin tone, hair color, and style. In this blog, we'll discuss some tips for finding the perfect pieces for your shoot.
Your lingerie needs to be comfortable
Let's talk about what types of lingerie are best for you. There are so many different kinds, from bras and panty sets to robes, negligees, and my personal favorite, bodysuits. While you may be used to wearing certain pieces that work well with your body shape, it's important to remember that there is no one-size-fits-all solution. If your underwear doesn't fit right, then it can cause discomfort or even pain.
The most important thing is this: if something doesn't feel good—if it's too tight or loose—take it off immediately! Your comfort should come first when choosing lingerie. Plus, if you’re uncomfortable then that is going to show up in photos. Comfortable lingerie allows you to feel more confident since it already feels good to be in.
Getting the Right Fit
The first step to getting the right lingerie is knowing your measurements and size. To find out your measurements, measure yourself once in each of the following areas:
Chest/bust (measure around the fullest part of your chest with bra on)
Waist (measure around narrowest point above hips)
Hips (measure around widest part of hips)
Underbust (measure under bust at fullest point)
You should also know what size bra you wear and how it fits. Make sure there’s no excess fabric or gaping between the breast tissue and cups, as well as no wrinkles in fabric near armpits. If any of these things happen, choose a different bra.
Plan your lingerie ahead of time
In addition to knowing your lingerie style preferences and materials, you'll also need to carefully consider how you’re getting your lingerie. We have an extensive client closet with over 400 pieces ranging from XS-6X. However, if you decide to bring your own pieces make sure you give yourself plenty of time for them to arrive. My favorite shops are Fredricks, Shein, Amazon, and Yandy.
Let’s Talk Shoes
Your shoes are (almost) as important as your lingerie. They're the finishing touch to any outfit, and they can make a statement about who you are and what you're about. So when you're putting together your lingerie look, don't forget to think about your shoes!
Comfort is key! Even if you’re only in the shoes for a few minutes at a time you don’t want to be uncomfortable. (See point #1)
You don’t have to wear stilettos. Get creative! I’ve had boots, chucks, vans, heck - even roller skates!
Do a Variety of Lingerie
I love bodysuits for boudoir sessions and the beautiful thing about them is they come in a wide array of colors and styles. You can do 2-3 different body suits and still have a diverse gallery of images. When you mix them with robes and other types of lingerie you get a super fun curated wardrobe. When you’re thinking about your boudoir session items like a white tank tops and jerseys are great options too!
Lingerie is also an opportunity for you to play up your natural beauty with accessories like earrings, necklaces, or rings that complement your outfit choices. Don't be afraid to go bold! Try pairing those strappy black heels with some subtle gold jewelry. However, if you opt to get a mani/pedi then we suggest soft, neutral, or jewel tones. Trendy shapes and bedazzles are fun but you want your photos to be timeless.
Consider your skin tone
You might think that the color of your skin doesn't matter, but it does. If you have a darker complexion lighter colors like yellow, turquoise, and coral are great choices. If you’re light-skinned then moodier colors look really good. Colors that look good on almost all skin tones? Jewel tones, like ruby, emerald, amethyst, and sapphire are always good choices.
